How to financially survive March break

March break, spring break, winter break—no matter what your school district calls it, it’s fast approaching. By now, you’ve probably started thinking about how you’re going to spend quality time with the kids.

We know planning activities to keep everyone occupied can be a lot of work and going out to see a movie every night of the week can add up. That’s why we’re here to help with some cost-conscious ideas to keep your kids entertained over the break.

1. Start with the calendar: Visit websites and social media channels for local spots in your area and build a calendar of free events. Be sure to check your library listings, your local community centre, bookstores, or museums. You can often find reduced-prices or even free activities offered daily over the break. Choose what sounds best (and double check it suits your budget).

2. Get crafty: Check out your craft supplies and then take to Pinterest. The internet is your friend when it comes to printable activity sheets, colouring sheets, and more. Endless games and activities are at your fingertips.

3. The great family bake-off: You can’t turn on your TV or scroll through your social feed without seeing a cooking show or an overhead cooking demo. Take it offline by spending an afternoon challenging your kids to follow recipes. If you already have a well-stocked pantry, this activity is low-cost and high-reward.

4. Spa at home: Pop on a playlist and grab some fuzzy blankets to kick off a relaxing day at the spa—from the comfort of home. Up the experience by preparing DIY body scrubs or face masks in advance. If spas aren’t your thing, an all-day pajama party is a great excuse to indulge in a comfy movie marathon.

5. Host a workshop: If you know someone with an interesting hobby—whether it’s sewing, hand lettering, painting, playing an instrument, or practicing yoga—see if they will come over and host a workshop in your home. Bringing in a neighbour or family friend can make learning a new skill fun.

There are many ways to enjoy March break without breaking the bank. With a simple internet search, you can be well underway to create with the kids or binge your favourite family movies.
