In 1922, a group of local fishermen, led by Chester McCarthy, a young lawyer with a vision, founded the Tignish Fishermen's Council.
Their goal was simple yet profound: to take control of their own destiny by establishing a cooperative that would ensure fair treatment and ownership of their business. By 1925, their dream took shape and the Station No. 1 Fishermen's Union of Prince Edward Island was born, marking the first incorporated fishermen’s union in Canada.
Over the decades, the cooperative evolved, its name changing in 1960 to Tignish Fisheries Co-operative Association Limited. By 1995, construction began on a state-of-the-art facility, and Royal Star Foods Ltd., a subsidiary, was established to handle the growing market.
Their local credit union has been a pillar of support since its inception in 1937. The local credit union has provided crucial financial services, including loans and advice, helping the cooperative navigate both prosperous and challenging times.
Despite numerous challenges, the cooperative remained steadfast. Under the guidance of its board of directors, it overcame obstacles and continued to grow. Central to their operations is a set of core values that include honesty, integrity, and a deep sense of community. With 220 members, 700 fishermen’s crew, and 350 employees, its impact stretches beyond seafood processing. Local businesses such as boat haulers, trucking companies, and fishing supply stores all benefit from the cooperative’s success.
For everyone involved, it is more than a business; it’s a shared journey and a source of pride that makes a tangible difference in their lives.
