Island Folk Cider House, Cape Breton Island’s first cidery, thrives by producing exceptional cider from local ingredients, fostering community through its welcoming taproom, and achieving success with the support of their credit union.
In the heart of Cape Breton Island, where rugged coastlines blend with the vibrant spirit of its people, Island Folk Cider House was born—the island’s first cidery. Their focus is on two complementary components: producing exceptional cider made from 100% Nova Scotia apples and creating a welcoming taproom in Sydney’s historic North End. Locals and tourists alike are embraced with Cape Breton’s legendary hospitality, making Island Folk a true community hub.
Their journey began in February 2020, when they crafted their first batch of cider. By June, they were selling takeaway cider from their production area, and in December, they proudly opened their taproom, just in time to bring some festive cheer to the community. All of their cider is crafted using ingredients sourced from local producers—Annapolis Valley apples, Margaree blueberries, Isle Madame honey, and much more. With over 50 unique cider offerings to date, they take pride in using local ingredients to celebrate Cape Breton’s rich agricultural heritage.
Supporting local is at the heart of everything they do. Their cider is available not only in their taproom but also through various channels, including local delivery, shipping across the country, and in over 100 locations from Ingonish to Yarmouth. Additionally, two of their ciders are available in more than 50 NSLC stores across Nova Scotia.
A significant part of their brand identity was shaped in collaboration with Cape Breton artist Alison Uhma. They wanted the name and logo—Island Folk Cider House—to represent a gathering space, a house filled with community while reflecting the quality and diversity of the island’s people.
None of this would have been possible without the support of their local credit union, which provided the financing required to start the business. The credit union played a crucial role in bringing Island Folk Cider House to life.
Their core values are simple yet impactful: support local, prioritize community over competition, create sustainable employment, and offer an inclusive space where everyone feels welcome. Whether hosting weekly performances by local artists, raising funds for nonprofits through trivia nights, or collaborating with small businesses for workshops, Island Folk is committed to being a community anchor.
As they continue to grow, with plans for their own canning line in the works, Island Folk remains dedicated to the community. For them, supporting local is more than a slogan; it’s a way of life. Every sip of their cider is a celebration of Cape Breton’s people, culture, and spirit.
