Five Star Shellfish Inc. began its journey over 20 years ago, not as a grand business venture, but as a dream nurtured by three brothers: Wyatt, Gordon, and the late Troy Jeffery of Christopher’s Cross, PE. Growing up as oyster fishermen from as young as 13 years old, the Jeffery brothers saw a need for another shellfish buyer in their community and decided to fill that gap. Their vision was clear: to create a business supporting local fishermen while providing a high-quality product to the world. This led to Five Star Shellfish Inc., a raw molluscan shellfish processing facility specializing in oysters and quahaugs.

In the early days, the brothers juggled the demanding dual roles of fishermen and processors. By day, they harvested oysters from the pristine waters of their carefully managed aquaculture lease sites, and by night, they packed orders for their customers. This gruelling routine shaped the foundation of their company and its commitment to sustainable harvesting and the preservation of wild fish stock.

A key milestone in their history was the development of numerous aquaculture leases that allow Five Star Shellfish to harvest oysters year-round, even during the harshest winters when rivers freeze over. Their unique equipment enables them to continue operations through the ice, setting them apart as a highly qualified shellfish supplier.

Despite facing early challenges, their dedication and belief in their mission paid off. Today, Five Star Shellfish Inc. has grown from a humble operation into a respected name in the shellfish industry. The company employs around 15 locals and purchases shellfish from approximately 50 local fishermen, some of whom have been with them since the beginning. The Jeffery brothers take pride in treating their team like family, working alongside them every step of the way.

Their local credit union has played a vital role in their success, offering crucial support from streamlining payroll to enabling significant business upgrades. This partnership has been instrumental in their growth and in continuing their commitment to giving back to the community.
