CKDU-FM is a volunteer-based non-profit radio station in the campus community radio sector. Serving as Halifax's alternative media and news source, CKDU focuses on local stories and artists. On-air since 1985, CKDU strives to support and promote community members, providing a unique and essential service to the region.
CKDU has faced many challenges typical of volunteer-led non-profits, including high turnover, lack of funding, and bureaucratic obstacles. Despite these hurdles, CKDU has thrived for nearly 40 years, thanks to the hard work of dedicated volunteers, students, and community members. As CKDU approaches its 40th anniversary, the station is reinvigorated with excitement and engagement, ready to highlight the value of campus community radio.
The journey of CKDU began at Dalhousie University in 1964 as a student radio club. By 1969, the club moved into the newly completed Dalhousie Student Union building and broadcast throughout the building via a system of speakers. In 1975, the club became CKDU and began broadcasting through closed circuit to Dal residences. In 1983, Dalhousie students voted to convert CKDU to an FM station, and at 4:00 PM on February 1, 1985, CKDU began broadcasting to the larger world at the frequency 97.5 FM. In 2006, CKDU increased its broadcast power to 3200 watts and changed its frequency to 88.1 FM, significantly expanding its reach.
CKDU operates on the core principles of providing an alternative to private and public broadcasters and being a forum for diverse and under-represented voices, music, and news. The station is committed to public access to the airwaves and supports marginalized individuals and communities through its projects and programming.
The support of CKDU’s credit union has been instrumental to the station’s operations. The credit union has proven to be easy to work with, quick to respond to questions and concerns, and consistently friendly, helpful, and understanding.
Supporting local is a core value of CKDU. The station exists to serve community members, helping to amplify their messages and share their creations. CKDU promotes local businesses, artists, and acts as a resource for information and connection to all, embodying the spirit of local support and community engagement.
As CKDU-FM steps into its 40th year, it stands as a testament to resilience, community support, and the power of volunteerism. With a renewed focus on its mission, CKDU continues to be a vital voice for Halifax and beyond.
